What equipment to start Float Fishing?
Float fishing is surely one of the easiest fishing techniques to practice. It is done quickly, there is no need to have a lot of equipment and you can catch different species of fish. You just need :
- Fishing Rods : The choice of the Fishing Rods depends on where you want to fish. The closer you fish to the edge, the shorter the rod and the smaller the bulk. The farther you fish, the further you will need to cast, and have control of your line, which is easier with a long rod.
- Fishing Reels : The reel is a very important reserve of line to fight the bigger fish. If you are fishing near the shore, you won’t need a reel that’s too big. Size 3000 will be perfect. If you fish further, you can go on reel sizes between 4000 and 6000.
The more you go up in size, the more the power of the reel brake is important. You can then also fight larger fish, but will have less fishing comfort with a heavier reel to hold.
- Fishing Lines : The different types of wire will have a different effect on the way you fish. there are many types of Fishing lines :
* NYLON: It floats, and it’s elastic. Practical when you want to remain discreet, and to catch a minimum of fish. Prefer a thread whose size is between 25/100 and 40/100.
* THE BRAID: Thinner, and more resistant. Useful when you want to fish far away and want to fight big fish. Choose a braid whose size is between 16/100 and 20/100.
- Fishing Float : A Fishing Float has two functions: it serves to maintain the bait at the desired height and indicates by its dive the “touch” when the fish absorbs or bites the bait. The floats are made of cork, wood, porcupine spice , synthetic foam, or plastic.

Fish should never be wasted. If you catch a fish that is under the legal or minimum size or that you do not want to keep, release it quickly

I am glad you touch on this. It is very important that people handle the fish they catch with respect if they are releasing them so they can get bigger and be caught again!

Thank you. Very helpful. It’s been 50 years since I last fished with any consistency and I so much has changed with rods / reels etc..
